the critics saying Tom Hardy is “over-acting” in Venom are just used to superhero movie protagonists being stoic and silent and don’t know what to do with an actor who actually makes his characters express emotions in healthy ways lmao
(mild spoilers ahead) When Eddie’s sad he looks miserable and teary and openly expresses why. He shrieks when he’s startled. He panics when he’s confused and worried. He silently screams when he’s angry and can’t do anything about it. He reacts to the events of the movie in a way that someone might actually respond.
Critics are just so used to machismo in their superhero movies that they don’t know what to do in the absence of it.
point being: Venom was fucking good and the critics are wrong
honestly if you wouldn’t bond with a symbiote you’re a fucking idiot, like you get unbelievably powerful and sexy and all you have to do is what? not go in fire or listen to noises that sound bad? newsflash idiot i already dont go in fire or listen to noises that sound bad. dumbass. you gotta eat some living flesh once in a while? whatever dude easy shit
you dont even need to do that its canon that the symbiotes just need one chemical from people and its also found in chocolate so you get to be huge and sexy and eat a bunch of chocolate
So, let me guess— you just started a new book, right? And you’re stumped. You have no idea how much an AK47 goes for nowadays. I get ya, cousin. Tough world we live in. A writer’s gotta know, but them NSA hounds are after ya 24/7. I know, cousin, I know. If there was only a way to find out all of this rather edgy information without getting yourself in trouble…
You’re in luck, cousin. I have just the thing for ya.
I got your back, cousin. Just head over to Havocscope.
((PS: In case you’re wondering, Havocscope is a database full of information regarding the criminal underworld. The information you will find there has been taken from newspapers and police reports. It’s perfectly legal, no need to worry about the NSA hounds, cousin ;p))
I think on problem I have with Karen Traviss and a
good amount of Codywan shippers is how they treat the clones when they aren’t important to the Jedi anymore. Or how Cody and Darman
are treated after Obi-Wan isn’t in the picture anymore, or when E’Tain dies.
As if a clone’s early purpose or their happiness and worth is tied
to their Jedi. As if there is no way that a clone can be happy or have a decent life after their jedi dies.
Like if you have a clone/jedi relationship and the clone’s life is
miserable after the jedi is out of the picture then it shows me that your
prime use for the clone was for a fetish , and an accessory to make your jedi
characters’ life either more interesting, or paint them as some clone savior or
sympathizer. After the jedi is gone, then there is clearly no effort to make
said clone have a happy or content ending. There is no effort to paint them as
deserting and finding their own life or finding their own path or whatever.
This is why I can’t really read too much CodyWan fanfic, especially when the author isn’t a person of color, because the handling of Cody is disturbing.
Cody is usually always seen as a threat, despite being a genuinly good man, and has to be threatened by Anakin,or Qui-Gon.
Like it just reeks of the Brute Caraicture trope. What SUCKS about this is in other fics when Obi-Wan is shipped with a white characters (such as Qui-Gon, or Satine), they’re not met with the scrutiny the same way Cody, a man of color is.
Qui-Gon treated Obi-Wan like shit and imo shouldn’t be shipped with him, but you guys act like he’d be better to Obi-Wan than Cody?
You guys need to really, REALLY take into account that Cody is a man of color, and if you’re shipping him with Obi-Wan, you need to treat him just as you’d treat white characters you ship with Obi-Wan. Stop assuming he’s going to be dangerous or detrminetal to Obi-wan, when in reality it would be the other way around.
Learn how to write poc, or just don’t write them at all.
And this doesn’t just apply to Codywan, but literally all Clone and White character ships.
Don’t feitisie them, don’t make them angry or dangerous? Write them like people, and write them to the same and equal standards you write white characters too.
Exactly. Like he is always written as aggressive and somewhat brutish
to Obi-Wan. Despite the fact that in canon he never showed rude, aggressive or cold
tendencies toward Obi-Wan. He respected Obi-Wan, and was Obi-Wan friend. There was
no indicator that prior to Order 66, his personality was anything like how
codywan shippers portray it.
And that’s the thing– Order 66 is literally what a lot of codywan
writers decide to build up on. Like they take the way he acted, when he was
stripped of agency and freewill, and roll with it. That’s how they make him treat
Obi-Wan in fics and see nothing wrong with it. Fics where order 66 hasn’t even
happened yet.
And you are right, people like Satine, or Qui-Gon aren’t written
as aggressive and brutish when they are shipped with Obi-Wan? So why do the
writers go out of their way to make this brute like character for Cody?
Like when I first got into the fandom, and started shipping codywan–i saw a of stuff like this. And I also fell into some of the harmful tropes, of making cody aggressive and cold and all. I’m glad I got past that but I hate that it’s so normalized in the codywan fandom.
Me when I see people’s clone OCs: 👌👀👌👀👌👀👌👀👌👀 good shit go౦ԁ sHit👌 thats ✔ some good👌👌shit right👌👌there👌👌👌 right✔there ✔✔if i do ƽaү so my self 💯 i say so 💯 thats what im talking about right there right there (chorus: ʳᶦᵍʰᵗ ᵗʰᵉʳᵉ) mMMMMᎷМ💯 👌👌 👌НO0ОଠOOOOOОଠଠOoooᵒᵒᵒᵒᵒᵒᵒᵒᵒ👌 👌👌 👌 💯 👌 👀 👀 👀 👌👌Good shit
i think there are some clone/jedi relationships done good, but then some are really bad. like really bad. like the clone wars and some of the novels that are clone/jedi centric have bad takes. the best clone/jedi ships i’ve seen are mostly created by fans who actually care about the clones and put effort into it. but the actual creators of the shows and the novels…did really badly with clone/jedi relationships and leaned far to heavily on the “this jedi is nice so nothing is wrong and x clone is happy”. like that’s why i like looking at like jedi/clone ships created by fans bcs you can tell they care about the clone in question more than care about making their jedi character a savior.
Bad takes
Clones doing all of the emotional labor for their poor, suffering Jedi
Clones making sure Obi-Wan gets a nap, or Anakin gets comforted or Ahsoka gets built-up exclusively, without any return of their care
Jedi taking for granted that their clones will do all of these things.
Jedi ignoring the fact that there’s a huge power imbalance in a clone/Jedi relationship.
Jedi ignoring the fact that the clones are slaves.
Good takes
Jedi realizing they’re not owed emotional labor and providing comfort, concern and care for their clone(s) in an overt manner, not just saying it, but acting on it openly
Jedi taking their clones on leave whenever possible to give them rest and recreation.
Jedi admiring how handsome/beautiful/wonderful/special the clones are; instead of Jedi being the prize to be sought after, acting the opposite by wanting to earn the esteem of the clones.
Jedi realizing that it’s not all about them.
Jedi actually acting to help the clones in any way they can, on the battlefield and off.
Jedi actually mourning those they lose in battle, genuinely, on the same level as the clones they lead.
Jedi actually measuring out how dangerous to their troops a battle might be and making any necessary decisions with clear minds and eyes.
Jedi standing up to bad behavior by other Jedi regarding the clones. (HOW THE HELL DID KRELL KEEP HIS COMMISSION SO LONG)
Yes I totally agree. A lot of people literally just use the
clones as tools for the jedi to let out all their emotional pain and labor out
on. And the clones are supposes to be some bland people that just absorb all
that labor without any emotional problems of their own. Like ppl don’t really care
to think about what the clones go through. Like I see this done a lot with rex
and cody. Like cody turns out to be obi-wan’s comfort pillow and rex is
supposed to be like, Anakin and ahsoka’s nanny—that’s how people write their
characters. I am so sick of clones being used for nothing more than the jedi’s
emotional toil and labor. And like yes, one thing that a lot of ppl rarely do
when shipping certain ships is never think the call out the power imbalance and
it’s sometimes ignored al together.
I agree with all your good takes too, and I think a bit one
for me personally, is just actually calling out how bad cloning is. Like actually
challenging the other jedi, the council, etc. like it would be awesome if more
jedi stood up to krell (esp bcs they knew how many clones died under his
command!), but I would also like some challenge the council. Even if it means
them losing a seat in the council, even if it meant some of them losing their
place in the Order because, if the jedi are all about peace and freedom them
being expelled from an establishment that promotes slavery shouldn’t be that
bad in the long wrong. But yes, I love your commentary!
<333 I love your original post. Like– yes, all of this.
