It’s weird that despite how simple a movie Venom is, it still goes over the heads of a lot of critics.
I just saw a critic say that he was confused by Carlton Drake’s character because he didn’t understand if he was supposed to be intimidating or not.
And most fans of the movie could tell you that Carlton Drake is supposed to be both. His public persona of the relatable young inventor is supposed to fool both the characters and maybe even the audience to trust him, make people believe in him and what he’s trying to accomplish. But it hides a darker truth in plain sight about what he and his business are actually like.
The truly terrifying thing about him is seeing him so easily switch between the two personas. Like how in one scene he’s giving an impassioned personal speech to a test subject (in which he implies he considers himself to be god) and then when the subject dies, he coldly calls for the next subject to be brought in, without his demeanor or tone changing all that much.
Ironically, Carlton Drake was living as a symbiosis of two personalities from the very start, long before he bonded with Riot.
