Me: It baffles me that people constantly overlook Ariel’s story in The Little Mermaid and the fact that her desire to be human is comparable to the struggle of transgender individuals —
The “feminists”: BUT SHE HAD A LOVE INTEREST THEREFORE SHE’S A BAD ROLE MODEL, MOANA AND MERIDA ARE BETTER CUZ THEY DIDN’T HAVE ROMANCE, WE ENTIRELY BASE A CHARACTER’S WORTH ON THIS FOR SOME REASON WITHOUT REALIZING THIS IS IN FACT INTERNALIZED MISOGYNY
Me: Kindly fuck off
Also, The Little Mermaid was the first of the new disney story formula for the “independent princess” that we know today. Before Ariel all princesses had to wait for a prince to come save them (snow white, aurora, Cinderella, ect) while Ariel was the first one to save herself with some help from a prince but not dependant on him.
The success of the Little Mermaid is what made Belle, Jasmine, Moana and Merida possible because the movie showed that princesses could save themselves and people would like it. Yeah, Ariel wasnt as “progressive” as the most recent princesses but that’s because the writers had to take baby steps to get where we are today and Ariel was the first triumph.
So how about y’all start giving Ariel some damn respect?
