those posts criticizing common writing patterns in fanfiction are so fucking harmful and they ruined me
so like yknow what??? People tell you to avoid “smirk” and “chuckle” as descriptors because no one does those things (???) but then when I need to use those words I have a ten minute crisis about how I’m a shitty writer. So heres my unwarranted writing advice: If you want your characters to smirk and chuckle fucking let them and don’t let anyone tell you that no one smirks or chuckles because I do both on a daily basis whenever I tell a shitty pun, bye
Edgy fanfiction critics can eat my entire ass.
Or those people looking down on others who write in present tense, or even past tense, or those who criticize whole sub-genres like reader fic or epistolary, or those who criticize writing non-realistic relationships or what the fuck ever.
You do you. You write what you want, how you see it or hear it or smell it or whatever in your imagination. Because you are writing for you and no one is fucking paying you to share these things. You are sharing because you have passion for these topics. Imagine what it would be like if some assholes took that away because they told you there’s a wrong way of writing and you became too scared to write, let alone share?
Fuck. That. Noise.
And y’know what? How else are we going to learn? Take a class from some stuffy writing prof (sorry if you are one) and listen to their bias? We don’t even get to judge their writing style before we take a class from them! They could suck! There are so many different styles out there, and so many are valid.
And sure, yes, there is bad writing. There is! But it doesn’t mean we stomp on these people. Be supportive, and maybe they’ll grow. Maybe they won’t, and that’s okay too. As long as they’re having fun.
It’s not like these people are hurting anyone.
So back the fuck off, you pretentious assholes.
