I need like 800 more issues of these comics. In every single panel he appears in, Obi-Wan’s robe is flying around in the wind, his hair is a work of art, and Anakin is understandably like “…wow. He’s my hero. 😍” on every page.
Here’s an idea…
Obi-wan always looks rather dashing with his swooshy hair (especially the Jedi mullet hot damn I will defend that to the death), billowing robes, and arched eyebrows.
But! In this comic series especially he is rather larger than life. I mean, look at this image.
We’re seeing Obi-wan in this comic from a young Anakin’s point of view and it’s AMAZING. Look at the above image. We, as the readers, are looking up at Obi-wan with Anakin, from his literal perspective. Of course, Obi-wan’s flair is ratcheted up in this comic by 15,000 points. This is how Anakin sees Obi-wan at point – he hero-worships him (which, incidentally, is also a huge problem and a definite issue in Anakin’s character. “Never meet your heroes,” so the old saying goes.) But this is before the Sandpeople, before Geonosis, before Palpatine truly got his insidious claws into Anakin. All he sees is this Jedi Master, his Jedi Master. He just…thinks the galaxy of Obi-wan.
“There’s no one better.”
*ohmyheart*
And Obi-wan’s portrayal here is a little over-the-top, even for this drama llama lineage. Because that’s how Anakin sees him. Indomitable, larger-than-life, the Jedi Master.
Look at the two cover variants. The first, which is totally from Anakin’s perspective.
Obi-wan, brandishing his lightsaber, robes flying everywhere, the very picture of a dashing warrior. And of course, Anakin is bringing up the rear, ever so much the protege of this amazing Jedi Master, looking just as dashing himself. (Let us not say that Anakin is without ego.)
And then there’s this variant, which is totally the Obi-wan point of view.
That’s probably how Obi-wan sees himself. Just a regular Jedi Knight (although if pressed, he would say he at least has good hair). No dramatic posing, no billowing robes, not even the warrior stance. Obi-wan looks defense. And of course, his young impetuous charge, Anakin, is ready to battle like any self-assured pre-teen would be. And you can just feel Obi-wan’s internal sigh, can sense him as the unprepared single dad who needs to protect his student(son) but is also undoubtably thinking, “Ahhhhhhhnakin. Really, must you strike that pose every time?”
Of course, the truth lies somewhere in the middle, as always, as we know that Obi-wan has a flair for the dramatic, the swooshy hair, the billowing robes. He just doesn’t see it that way.
